From what I've seen, it's still the age old reason of backlinks.
The post goes in, seemingly real, they leave it to sit there for days, weeks or even months by which time the post is on another page or the topic has died out with no more replies so slides down the list, then they come back and edit it to include an ad link. That means it'll sit unnoticed unless someone happens to look at an old topic.
Other spammers are more direct. They'll add a link in the post, plain as day or as a single character or a 1 pixel high font.
Maybe some sort of edit log would be useful. User X edited post ID Y on <date>. And also a reference to the date the post was made so if it's just a few minutes you could ignore it as a typo edit but if it's more than 48 hours say, it could flag it up.
