You can still install the old phpBB2 on a personal webserver to see the looks (you do have a full backup I presume?)Just an update.
Never found a way to do relative from domain to subdomain so abandoned the idea the hosters AI suggested![:evil:]( "Evil or Very Mad")
Decided to just update the php and lose the old forum, done one so far, straight from 2 to 3.3 so that was good. I made the stupid error of not taking a screenshot of the old forum so starting again with the style.
Just got the bigger one to do now, hopefully i can remember what i did, and i have taken screen shots
