Is there an existing plugin for wysiwyg? The only one I can find hasn't been updated for years, and apparently has various issues (ie: can't support custom BBC tags). It'd probably make more sense to start with something more current (SCEditor ??) and adapt that to phpBB.
I agree that simplifying the user experience is a good goal. Personally I end to prefer BBC, because typing codes is often quicker and more convenient than messing with wysiwyg controls, but many people are lost with BBC or just find it annoying.
